Dodge Hornet Scheduled Maintenance Overview

The Dodge Hornet is a four-door compact crossover with standard all-wheel drive and two compact turbocharged powertrains. The GT and GT Plus run a 2.0L Hurricane4 turbo I-4 (268 hp / 295 lb-ft) with a 9-speed automatic. The R/T and R/T Plus plug-in hybrids pair a 1.3L turbo with a rear electric motor and a 15.5-kWh battery for 288 hp and 383 lb-ft combined through a 6-speed hybrid automatic. 2025 is the Hornet's final model year, which makes keeping to the factory schedule the best way to protect a vehicle that will not be replaced. Compact turbocharged engines demand precise oil specs and conservative service intervals, and our Mopar-certified team services every Hornet with OEM-spec parts.

Hornet uses the Stellantis Oil Change Indicator System, which brings the interval in sooner under hard driving, and the Hornet is quick. R/T PHEV owners: the gas engine still needs its oil change on time even if most trips are electric. Whatever the indicator says, the 2025 owner's manual specifies never exceeding 10,000 miles, 12 months or 350 engine hours between oil changes.

Engine-Specific Maintenance Details

The 2025 Hornet uses two compact turbocharged engines, each with its own oil spec. The 2.0L Hurricane4 in the GT and GT Plus takes SAE 5W-30 full synthetic meeting Stellantis MS-13340 (API SP/GF-6A), 5 quarts with the Mopar 4892339BE filter, and its four Mopar 68292346AA spark plugs go 60,000 miles; the 948TE 9-speed automatic uses Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF, with Mopar 75W-90 synthetic GL-5 in the power transfer unit and rear drive module. The 1.3L turbo in the R/T and R/T Plus takes SAE 0W-30 full synthetic (MS-13340), 5 quarts with the Mopar 68439517AA filter, four Mopar 68644215AA plugs every 40,000 miles and Mopar AW-1 fluid in its 6-speed hybrid automatic. Neither transmission, the PTU nor the rear drive module has a scheduled fluid change; levels are inspected at 40,000-mile steps. Both engines share the Mopar 68338536AA cabin filter, Mopar DOT 4 brake fluid and Mopar 10 Year/150,000 Mile OAT coolant. Get the right oil for your engine.

PHEV & Turbo Powertrain Considerations

The R/T's plug-in hybrid system adds a 15.5-kWh, 306-volt lithium-ion battery that is refrigerant-cooled, a 44-hp belt starter-generator on the engine and a 121-hp rear electric motor that provides the electric all-wheel drive. The battery and power-electronics coolant (7.4 quarts) is a dealer-service item that requires a special tool and is flushed with the engine coolant at 10 years or 150,000 miles, and the high-voltage system is inspected at the dealer. On both engines, the small-displacement turbos are why the oil spec matters: 5W-30 for the 2.0L, 0W-30 for the 1.3L, both MS-13340, changed on the indicator and never past 12 months. Brembo-equipped Track Pack Hornets follow the same 2-year DOT 4 brake fluid interval as every other Hornet.

  • Italian-platform Group 51R AGM battery is less common than standard American sizes — make sure replacements are OEM-spec.
  • R/T PHEV owners: the gas engine still needs annual oil change even if you drive mostly electric.
  • Compact turbocharged engines (especially the 1.3L) are unforgiving of substandard oil — always use full synthetic 0W-20.
  • PHEV regenerative braking dramatically extends brake pad life (60,000+ miles common).
  • Track Pack Brembo brake pads require OEM-spec replacements only.
  • All-wheel drive across the lineup — keep tires matched and rotate per schedule.
  • Cold-start operation in Western NC winters stresses turbo bearings — allow brief warm-up.
  • PHEV high-voltage system service requires factory-trained technicians — we have them.

Severe & Special Operating Conditions

Stellantis defines severe operating conditions as any of the items below. Hornet performance driving and short-trip PHEV use both push many owners toward the early end of the Oil Change Indicator. The 2025 plan responds by inspecting the engine air cleaner at every oil change in dusty or off-road conditions and rotating the tires at the first sign of irregular wear; spark plugs stay on their mileage schedule (60,000 miles for the 2.0L, 40,000 for the 1.3L) in all conditions.

  • Frequent short trips that prevent engine warm-up (common around Brevard)
  • Aggressive driving — Hornet is quick for a compact crossover
  • Heavy stop-and-go traffic (Asheville commute)
  • Track Pack autocross or spirited use
  • Sustained mountain grade driving (Western NC routes)
  • Operating in dusty conditions or gravel forest roads
  • Extreme cold weather (below 0°F) or extreme heat (above 100°F)
  • PHEV: frequent fast charging accelerates HV battery wear

Service for Dodge Hornet Owners Across Western NC

Hornet owners across Western NC use the compact crossover in a mix of ways: daily commuting around Brevard, longer drives to Asheville (~40 minutes), Hendersonville (~30 minutes), Waynesville and Pisgah Forest. Mountain grades stress brakes, which is why the 2-year DOT 4 brake fluid change matters here. Cold winter starts stress turbo bearings. Our Mopar-certified team is trained on both Hornet powertrains, including PHEV high-voltage service for R/T owners, and will keep servicing the Hornet long after its final 2025 model year.

Monthly & Semi-Annual Owner Checks

Between scheduled service visits, a few quick owner checks help catch problems before they become repairs. These take only a couple of minutes and apply to every 2025 Dodge Hornet.

  • Tire pressure — check monthly when cold; loaded family trips and Western NC temperature swings change pressure.
  • Engine oil level — check every 2-3 fuel fill-ups; turbo engines benefit from monitoring.
  • Coolant level — verify between MIN and MAX monthly.
  • Brake fluid level — check the master cylinder reservoir monthly.
  • Washer fluid — top off as needed.
  • R/T PHEV 12V battery — occasional charging if vehicle sits unused for weeks.
  • Charge port and cable (R/T PHEV) — inspect monthly.
  • Tire sidewalls and tread — inspect monthly.
Note on Pricing: Hornet service pricing varies between GT (gas) and R/T (PHEV). The two engines use different oils, filters and spark plugs, and PHEV high-voltage and battery-coolant work carries additional cost. Call (828) 492-2121 for trim-specific quotes.
